#389 Increase Labor Dollars Quickly Without Raising Rates

Send this email to your staff today.

“What is one thing we could do at our shop that would allow you to produce a half hour (.5) more per week? I need your reply today. Thanks!”

Evaluate the replies. Try to do something, wholly or partially, with each one, and tell them what you did. If the net effect is 1.0 hour, over 52 weeks, you gain 52 times your labor rate. Not bad.

#388 The First Two Questions to Ask an Applicant During an Interview

1: “First, I’d like to get to know you a bit. Tell me all about you.”

2: “That’s interesting! Tell me more!”

Often, this will answer several of your other interview questions. It may also answer other questions you have that are not on your list of questions to ask.

#387 False Assumptions For Shop Owners

Most new auto shop owners are soon disappointed by the many problems in every area of managing an auto repair shop. They expected a few, but not this many! But what they anticipated was something that does not exist. The nature of running a shop is a series of problems. That does not mean you should not do all you can to minimize them, but it does mean that you should expect them. Maybe a 30-minute time slot on your daily calendar for solving problems. Plan for them. Then you won’t be so disappointed when they occur, and you’ll be pretty happy when few or none occur for a few days!
